Weakness Identified, Hire Made

Posted by basketballballer on January 18, 2007

Denver Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster will be the next head football coach at the University of Minnesota. The official announcement will come at a Wednesday news conference at the McNamara Alumni Center. While we know little about Brewster, (NFL assistant with Broncos and Chargers, assistant to Mack Brown at North Carolina and Texas, and is regarded as a top-notch recruiter) we like how Gophers Athletic Director Joel Maturi handled the process.

As hard as it is for us to praise Maturi around here, we feel that he entered the process with a plan (a big step forward for Joel). Maturi didn’t hide his disappointment in Glen Mason’s inability and unwillingness to sell the Gopher program 365 days a year to recruits, parents, big business, boosters, and high school coaches. That little meeting Maturi had with the Minnesota High School coaches a week ago should have given everyone all the insight they needed as to the direction Maturi was headed with the coaching vacancy.

Whether it was Maturi’s, or the search firm hired by the University (a good move despite what virtually all of KFAN’s talking heads would have you believe), idea to go after a recruiter over a coach with name appeal, while not initially popular, was a smart decision that attempts to fix the problems the school had with attracting enough high quality recruits. Maturi handled the hiring process swiftly, with discretion and most importantly, with a master plan. The post Mason era is off to a good start. Will Brewster be the coach to bring the University to the next level?  That question will be answered in four to five years. With National Signing Day for high school recruits February 7th, Brewster has 23 days to impress recruits. Twenty three days we would rather have in Brewster’s hands than in Mason’s hands.

The Back Page: Alonzo Mourning – Never Lost Hope

Posted by basketballballer on January 18, 2007

As the Miami Heat prepare for their first ever trip to the NBA Finals, which begins Thursday night, the same can be said for Heat reserve Alonzo “Zo” Mourning. It seems that Mourning has been around the game longer than his 13-years, but few realize that at one point his career was in jeopardy.
