with Kelvin Sampson,
University of Indiana Head Coach,
‘01-’02 National Coach of the Year
The beginning of solid defensive transition starts with great communication. Coach Sampson uses even/odd situations to teach the defense to react and defend in disadvantage situations like 3-on-2, 4-on-3, and 5-on-4. Through the use of drills, Sampson does a detailed job of presenting his brand of stopping the opponent from scoring easy baskets in transition. Moving to special situations, Sampson believes scoring from the sideline is a crucial part of the game. He presents a number of plays to accomplish this important skill. The first play starts from a triple stack is best used when your team is down 2 points. Post read is the next play and puts pressure on the low post defender. This is a great low clock sideline out-of-bounds play. Others include the push play on the baseline, four across from the sideline and a baseline box play. He ends with three potent set plays. One Down, is a play that gets the ball to the post in a special situation, and Post Shake is a post isolation play. Show and Go is a creative set play that utilizes the slip screen to the basket.

In THE RECORD, Al Iannazzone writes “Former Knicks’ All-Star Allan Houston is trying to return to the NBA, and he may do so with the Nets. According to multiple league sources, the Nets will offer Houston a “make-good” contract for the veteran’s minimum. If the shooting guard accepts and his body holds up through next month’s training camp, he will be on the team this season.”

Opening Comments from Doc Rivers:
I can’t tell you how excited I am to be coming to Europe. I think for me and for our team being so new, I don’t know if this is the exact number but I think we have 9 team players of our 15. I’m really going to use the European trip obviously for our training camp and preseason but mostly as a bonding trip for us so I think it’s a great time for us to come over.

with Steve Smith,
Oak Hill Academy (VA) Head Coach,
2004 National High School Champions
According to Coach Smith, three things lead to missed shots: improper footwork, poor release point and a weak finish. To help strengthen those areas, Smith presents more than 20 drills for individual and team workouts. Smith preaches the importance of practicing lay-ups from game-like angles. His first drill is the five spot lay-up drill. He then demonstrates the Intensity Lay-up Drill, which is a conditioning drill that demands concentration. A set of individual shooting drills begins with the Sideline baby jumper drill. Five minute shooting, Alford drill, three spot shooting, run the W, 2 minute shooting and the 36 point drill make up the core off individual shooting drills. Team drills include straight line shooting, wing to wing, three down drill, the Super 60, three man shooting, 25 and up three. Free throws are part of every practice and Smith shares his favorite free throw drills that are competitive and require consistent shooting from the line.

In the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, Charles F. Gardner writes “Milwaukee Bucks general manager Larry Harris said Friday that he still wanted guard Charlie Bell on the team’s roster next season, despite comments from Bell’s agent that the player does not want to return. Bell, a valuable reserve guard for the Bucks and a restricted free agent, has not been able to reach a contract agreement with the team. Training camp opens in less than three weeks – on Oct. 2 – at the Cousins Center in St. Francis.”

with Billy Gillispie,
University of Kentucky Head Coach
Coach Gillispie’s philosophy is based on toughness, defensive transition and “in your face” man defense. Gillispie uses the half court shell drill to set the mentality for his defense. The 12-point focus of this drill is man pressure, help side defense, pass denial position, talking, front the cutter, jump to the ball, vision of the ball, defending screens, rotation, post dive, midline rule and the idea of “two guys guarding the ball.” Detailed technique for handling back, fade and down screens are part of this drill. Gillispie uses the full court shell drill to teach his transition defense. This drill begins at one end with a 4-on-4 alignment on one end. Once in the half court, the half court shell drill takes over. The diamond drill is designed to guard baseline penetration and rotate properly as a team. The 5-on-4 is a disadvantage defensive drill that stresses the defense. Keys are communication, help, rotation and close outs. The next drill is 3-on-3 transition drill, which begins 3-on-3 on one end and becomes 5-on-4 on the other. In addition, Gillispie shares two favorite special plays for winning close games.
